The New Edition IEE Wiring Regulations is the latest update to the 16th Edition Wiring Regulations.
All domestic and industrial electrical installations and wiring must conform to these new regulations and, so that the regulations are aligned with European legislation, the New edition contains some substantial changes over the previous edition.
This new edition of the wiring regulations, which now has a red cover is produced by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, commonly known as the IET.
Anyone who is involved in the maintenance, installation and/or design of electrical installations or wiring in buildings will be affected by the New edition wiring regulations as would professional engineers and students needing to gain recognised electrical qualifications.
This newest edition of the regulations will also be relevant to surveyors, local authorities, electricians, electrical contractors, consultants and architects and many other trades and professions that are related in some way to the electrical industry.
What’s in the New Edition Wiring Regulations ?
Industrial and domestic wiring must now conform to the national standard IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671). The latest edition (the New or 17th Edition) is now in print and available form electrical book retailers and from the IEE themselves.
There are many important changes, both to the layout and to the technical content of the latest new wiring regulations publication, the most noticable of which are summarised below:

Unlike previously, a socket outlet can now be fitted in a bathroom as long as it is 3m from the edge of a shower or bath and protected by a RCD.
‘Special Locations’ such as fairgrounds and amusement parks, photovoltaic power supplies, marinas, exhibitions and floor and heating systems are now included and referred to in the New edition.
The chapters are now numbered and structured differently for alignment with international standards.
As the 16th edition of the wiring regulations have been in place since 1991, the change to the New edition signifies the major changes in the contents of the latest edition.
